THE REAL HISTORY *** 1959 TO 1989 *** NO PREMIER LEAGUE YET *** THE WORLD THE GAFFER IS SET IN ***
THE HISTORY
The real football THE GAFFER is set in, 1959–1989.
THE GAFFER is fiction, but it runs on a real thirty-year stretch of English and Welsh
football. Everything below is factual history, not part of the game’s invented cast.
FOUR DIVISIONS, NOT A PREMIER LEAGUE
Across the whole era, the top four levels were the Football League’s Division One,
Two, Three and Four — no Premier League yet. A win was worth two points, not three,
until the League moved to three in 1981–82. Below Division Four sat the non-League game
— a small club could, in principle, climb the whole way, which is the fantasy the game
is built on.
A GAME THAT DIDN’T PAY LIKE ONE
Until January 1961, football operated under a legally enforced maximum wage — £20 a
week in-season, whoever you were. A manager starting in 1959 begins in a game where the
biggest stars and a promising lower-league lad were only ever a few pounds apart.
A THIRTY-YEAR CAREER, AGAINST REAL FOOTBALL
1959A career begins. The maximum wage still has eighteen months left.
1960–61The League Cup is played for the first time. The maximum wage is abolished.
1961Tottenham become the first club of the century to win the League and FA Cup double.
1965Substitutes allowed in the Football League for the first time.
1966England host and win the World Cup.
1968Manchester United, the first English club to win the European Cup.
1971Britain decimalises its currency.
1976Yellow and red cards used in English football for the first time.
1981Three points for a win replaces two.
1985Bradford and Heysel force a reckoning with stadium safety.
1989Hillsborough leads to all-seater stadiums. The span the game covers ends here.
THE WELSH CLUBS
Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham and Newport all played in the English pyramid throughout this
era. Swansea rose from the Fourth Division to the First between 1978 and 1981, briefly leading
the top flight. In the game, town and city names are used only as place names — no real
club, badge or kit is represented.
AND THEN CAME THE PREMIER LEAGUE
Just past the end of the span this game covers, the First Division clubs broke away,
forming the FA Premier League on 27 May 1992. THE GAFFER is set before all of that — a
full thirty seasons of it, from a maximum-wage boardroom in 1959 to the eve of the game’s
own transformation, thirty years on.
THE GAFFER is a work of fiction. It uses real English and Welsh town names as place names
only; no real club, badge or person is represented. Its two cups are invented — the
Challenge Trophy and the Autumn Cup. Dialogue is worded by a third-party language model
running on the player’s own device — which may be substituted before or after release
for another of similar or modestly larger size. Its output is not written or endorsed by us, and
every consequence in the game is decided by the simulation, not the model. Full terms shown
in-game before play.
